Kvarteret Barberaren

Erskine designed few residential areas during the time when Sweden was building more homes than ever before. But the criticism of the large-scale and monotonous solutions of the 1960s was also harsh. The Barberaren block showed that it was possible to build empathetic, close and caring environments even with limited funds. In addition to housing, the area also houses a district centre. Hanging the balconies from beams on the roofs reduces the thermal bridges, but above all it gives the houses their own character. In 1970, The Barber was awarded the prestigious Kasper Salin Prize. The jury wrote that "he has intuitively felt for the individual and consistently represented his interests".
